When you think about a sister, who comes to mind? Do you have a sweet sibling who shared a room with you growing up – along with your secrets? How have you supported each other over the years?
My only sister passed away nearly 20 years ago and, truthfully, we really never possessed that strong sense of a sisterly bond, even in our early years. I’m not entirely sure why that was missing in our relationship. But God has blessed me with some amazing “sister-friends” over the years who definitely fill that gap!
What defines a true sister? Is it only a biological relationship, or something more? One definition of sisterhood is: a term of endearment used among women to signify close friendship, solidarity, or connection. I think it embodies that precious group of female friends in your life who always have your back! They know your heart… the things that feed your soul. They are your closest counselors, your prayer warriors, the ones you call when you need a shoulder to cry on or have a hilarious story to share and want someone to laugh alongside you.
Those gals are golden!
But there’s also another definition associated with sisterhood: it’s the concept of solidarity among women across the globe, united by shared experiences and a supportive community. And that includes ALL of us, as fellow females on this planet.
Yet, what does that look like?
Well, imagine what could happen if we intentionally chose to lift one another up instead of competing with each other. What if we championed confidence and self-worth in the women around us? What if… we encouraged ALL women, of every demographic, to recognize their value… supported women-led businesses… applauded one another’s successes… contributed to causes that empower women… enabled them (AND ourselves) to be viewed as valuable contributors to society and reminded each other that our voices matter?
When you support ministries and organizations that empower women and girls – whether locally, nationally or globally – you become part of that mission. You help provide resources, encouragement, education, and opportunities that can shape a woman’s future for years to come. You assume the role of a sister!
Organizations like A Beautiful Me do just that. We not only encourage young girls to recognize the source of true beauty that lies within, but through our emerge360 program we provide training for teen girls with skills that will enable them to feel purposeful and empowered – to step confidently into the future as entrepreneurs, business leaders, and strong contributors to their communities.
(If YOU know a high school-aged young woman who could benefit from the emerge360 program, you can learn more and encourage them to apply here: emerge360 Application )
This week, take a moment to reach out to the “sisters” in your own life – whether related by blood or simply bonded by love and friendship. Take time to tell them – whoever they are – how much you appreciate them and the impact they’ve had in your life! Thank them for the ways they’ve encouraged you, prayed for you, laughed with you, and carried you through difficult seasons. For all that they’ve taught you.
And then search out a way to be that sister to another female that God directs you to invest in.
Because we are, indeed, sisters – and sisterhood is one of life’s most beautiful gifts.
